For the treatment of retinitis pigmentosa, no specific curative treatment regimen is present except in few countries. However the progression of the disease can be reduced by Vitamin A therapy according to different researches. A daily intake of 15000 IU (equivalent to 4.5 mg) of Vitamin A palmitate has shown to hamper the course of the disease among adults suffering from typical forms of retinitis pigmentosa. Proper supplementation of Vitamin A has shown to postpone the risk of blindness by up to 10 years. Taking high dose of Vitamin A however can causes liver damage so risks should be weighed against benefits.
