What next, apart from USA?

Indian (even other international) students are very worried about the situation in USA, where the proposed legislations might affect their ‘employability’ chances and the opportunity to gain meaningful work experience in addition to the possibility of making a career/life in USA.

As far as education is concerned, there are absolutely no restrictions to study in USA – in good universities and programs. However, it is always best to plan for self-funding for the first semester (tuition and living) rather than looking for part-time jobs and other funding opportunities. It is expected (by the US government) that those who plan to study in USA, must be self-sufficient financially and should not depend upon jobs and doles. This trend will help students to get entry into USA if they show adequate proof of funds for their education.

Coming to employment after education (OPT), a major concern is about the proposal to restrict the same (OPT) to one year, instead of three years (for STEM program students) This effectively means that students can stay back for 12 months after their education, instead of 36 months. Please note however, that this is only a proposal and has not been made a law yet.

So, what are the options for Indian students who wish to avoid USA and look for other countries?

Canada is one country which is safer, equally good (for education), cheaper and more stable politically. Importantly, almost all programs/courses are available as in the US universities.

The biggest advantage for students is that they can stay back for THREE years in Canada, after their education, with a post-graduation work permit. This will help students to not only gain work experience but also use it for permanent residence (PR).

Obviously, Canada will be the best bet for education and settlement, as an alternative to USA.

Germany permits extension of visas to students for a period of one and half years (1.5 years) after their education. Students will have unrestricted access for employment, during this 1.5 year period.  While there is limited possibility to settle down in Germany after education and employment, the world-class education, coupled with rich work experience will provide students with opportunities world-wide for better prospects.

All said and done, USA is always the best destination in terms of education, flexibility, jobs, full-time employment opportunities and settlement. Moreover, with Trump’s proposal to offer ‘merit-based immigration’ to people who want to settle in USA (like Canada and Australia), USA becomes all the more attractive, notwithstanding the stray incidents that are troubling Indians.
